Scar revision is one of those treatments that can take a few sessions to significantly minimize or be a life long journey. Simply put, scars are a product of the body’s natural healing process. In reaction to significant damage to the skin, the body repairs it by producing a protein called collagen. The scar tissue is often different than normal skin in texture, appearance, and pigment. While treating a new scar can significantly reduce it’s appearance in a shorter amount of time compared to old scars, a scar still never truly goes away. A successful scar revision usually comes down to improving texture, pigment, and how well the scar blends into the surrounding skin.
As an aesthetic nurse, I’ve seen firsthand that some of the best scar revision results come from combination treatments rather than relying on a single modality. I’ve also personally struggled with a facial scar since I was 10 years old, so this is something I’ve approached both professionally and personally. I was so embarrassed by it that I always wore bangs to hide it. Thankfully, I became less ashamed of it overtime but treatments have also reduced the appearance enough where most people (including myself) don’t even notice it!
After trying multiple treatments over time, there are three med spa treatments that genuinely stood out to me when it came to improving scar appearance.
PDO Smooth Threads for Pigment & Scar Blending

One treatment that surprisingly made a noticeable difference in my own facial scar was PDO smooth threads.
PDO (Polydioxanone) threads are essentially polyester sutures that trigger the body to produce collagen in it’s place. These sutures have often been used in surgeries.
Today when people think about PDO threads, they usually associate them with lifting, but there are different threads and purposes for these threads. “Smooth threads” aren’t barbed so they are not meant for lifting. They can be incredibly beneficial for the rejuvenation of the skin and scars, especially scars that appear lighter or “depressed” compared to neighboring skin.
In my experience, the biggest improvement wasn’t necessarily the depth of the scar itself, but the way the scar began blending more naturally with the surrounding skin tone over time. My scar used to be much paler and after inserting the PDO smooth threads into my scar it started looking less “obvious” because pigment gradually returned and the tissue quality improved.
Why might this happen?
PDO threads stimulate a controlled healing response within the skin. That wound-healing cascade encourages collagen production, increased circulation, fibroblast activity, and tissue remodeling. Increased vascularity and collagen remodeling may help improve how light reflects off the scar and may also help restore a healthier appearance to scars that look pale, shiny, or atrophic.
Smooth threads may work particularly well for:
- Atrophic scars
- Indented scars
- Post-surgical scars
- Scars with uneven texture or pigment loss
One thing I appreciate about smooth threads is that the improvement can look very natural!
Morpheus8 for Scar Texture Remodeling

Another treatment I would highly recommend to anyone looking to minimize the appearance of their scar would be Morpheus 8 (or similar technology).
Morpheus8 combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy, allowing providers to target deeper layers of tissue while also stimulating collagen production near the surface.
For scars, this can be extremely helpful because many scars involve disorganized collagen. The skin texture becomes uneven, tethered, thickened, or indented compared to the surrounding tissue. Morpheus8 helps remodel that collagen architecture over time.
Personally, this treatment helped my scar blend more seamlessly with the surrounding skin texture. Instead of the scar catching light differently or appearing more rigid, the area gradually became smoother.
As an aesthetic nurse, I’ve also seen Morpheus8 work particularly well on tummy tuck scars when performed appropriately and consistently over time. Some patients see improvement not only in the scar itself, but also in the surrounding skin quality and mild laxity around the scar line.
Morpheus8 may help improve:
- Surgical scars
- Acne scars
- Textural irregularities
- Thickened scars
- Indented scars
- Scar-related skin laxity
One important thing to remember is that scar revision is rarely a one-and-done process. Multiple sessions are often needed because collagen remodeling takes time.
Clear + Brilliant for Tone, Texture & Overall Refinement

Clear + Brilliant is often marketed as a “baby Fraxel” laser, but I think people underestimate how useful it can be for scars especially when paired with other treatments.
While Morpheus8 works deeper, Clear + Brilliant helps resurface the skin. I’ve personally noticed significant improvement in scar texture and overall blending when combining the two treatments.
Clear + Brilliant creates controlled microscopic treatment zones in the skin, stimulating collagen turnover while improving tone and texture. This can be especially helpful for scars that have rough texture, uneven pigmentation, or a visible contrast against surrounding skin.
In my experience, the Morpheus8 and Clear + Brilliant combination has been one of the best pairings for improving both texture and tone simultaneously.
I’ve also seen this combination perform extremely well on tummy tuck scars. Over time, the scar often appears softer, smoother, and less visually distinct from neighboring skin.
Clear + Brilliant may be beneficial for:
- Surface texture refinement
- Mild discoloration
- Post-inflammatory pigmentation
- Acne scars
- Surgical scars
- Overall scar blending
Final Thoughts
One of the biggest misconceptions about scar revision is expecting scars to completely disappear. In reality, the goal is often to make the scar blend so naturally with surrounding skin that your eyes stop immediately focusing on it.
For me personally, the combination of PDO smooth threads, Morpheus8, and Clear + Brilliant overtime made the biggest difference in helping my scar look more integrated with the surrounding skin in both texture and tone.
As with most aesthetic treatments, results vary based on:
- Scar age (mine was much older when I started treatments)
- Scar depth
- Skin tone
- Skin type
- Genetics
- Consistency of treatment
- Provider technique
But when approached consistently, scar revision treatments can absolutely make a meaningful difference!
