My History with Elta Md Sunscreen

I’ve always had a complicated relationship with sunscreen. For years, I was using the tinted version of EltaMD UV Daily, and even though it would eventually blend in, there was always a subtle white cast that made me hesitate to wear it regularly. And to be honest, I don’t spend that much time in direct sunlight—usually just walking to the car or running errands (and my car windows are tinted). But the real reason I’d avoid it? Sunscreen can feel heavy and thick. Like my skin can’t breathe!
While working at the med spa, we had a visit from an EltaMD rep, and I told her why I usually skipped sunscreen. She mentioned they had a newer formula—the EltaMD UV Clear Deep Tinted sunscreen, made specifically with deeper skin tones in mind. Though I was reluctant I knew eventually, I had to try it.
Fast forward to a recent road trip where I knew I’d be more exposed to sunlight than usual. I applied the UV Clear Deep Tint and was shocked at how seamlessly it blended into my skin. No cast, no residue, and no greasy film. It actually felt good on my skin. It was light, breathable, and invisible. Finally, a formula that doesn’t make you feel like you’re wearing a layer of paint!
I don’t say this lightly: this is probably the most blendable and breathable tinted sunscreen I’ve ever used. A close second in terms of “blendability” is the Beauty of Joseon sunscreen (not tinted) which blends in well but for an oily skin girl, left me feeling a bit greasy. If you’ve been struggling to find a sunscreen that respects your skin tone and doesn’t suffocate your face, I’d highly recommend giving this one a try.
Why this Sunscreen is a Win (breakdown):

- Hybrid formula (Chemical + Mineral):
- This means you’re getting the best of both worlds:
- Mineral sunscreen (Zinc Oxide) sits on top of your skin and reflects UV rays. It’s gentle, great for sensitive skin, and gives you broad-spectrum protection.
- Chemical filters (Octinoxate) absorb UV rays and convert them into heat. These tend to feel lighter and blend easier.
- The hybrid combo = no white cast and full protection.
- This means you’re getting the best of both worlds:
- Tinted with Iron Oxides:
- That deep tint is thanks to iron oxides, which do more than just cancel out the chalky look mineral sunscreens can give.
- Iron oxides also help protect against blue light (HEV light)—from screens, devices, and yes, the sun.
- The “deep” tint helps to actually match and melt into melanated skin.
- Niacinamide (Vitamin B3):
- A multitasking skincare fave. Helps with:
- Reducing inflammation
- Improving skin texture
- Balancing oil production
- Fading dark spots and hyperpigmentation
- Perfect for post-acne marks or anyone trying to even their tone while protecting their skin.
- A multitasking skincare fave. Helps with:
- Lightweight and breathable texture:
- Doesn’t feel like you’re layering sludge on your face.
- Sits beautifully under makeup or on bare skin.
- Formulated for acne-prone and sensitive skin:
- Non-comedogenic, fragrance-free, paraben free, oil-free!
- Ideal for people who are breakout-prone but still want sun protection that won’t break them out.
If you’ve got melanin-rich skin and you’ve been skipping sunscreen because of past disappointments, this is definitely worth trying. I’ll be honest and say sunscreen isn’t an everyday routine for me as I’m typically not exposed to much sun (it’s okay to let a little bit in). But on the days when you’re outside more often, whether you’re out in the sun for hours or just running longer errands, it’s nice knowing your sunscreen isn’t working against your skin.
