The Age Old Problem with Sunscreen

If you have melanated skin, you already know:

Sunscreen is either going to blend… or absolutely disrespect you.

If you have darker skin, having a white cast, gray undertones and patchiness are not an option!
So when I say these are the best sunscreens I’ve personally tried, I mean:

  • They blend well
  • They sit well on the skin
  • They actually look good throughout the day

And as an oily skin girly, they also:

  • don’t suffocate my skin
  • and they don’t make me look extra greasy (but give me the right amount of glow)

#3 EltaMD UV Clear / UV Daily (Non-Tinted)

My experience:

Coming in as number three on my list of favorite sunscreens is the EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46/EltaMD UV Daily SPF 40. These are my baseline reliable sunscreens. One of the first med spa sunscreens I used and actually liked how I looked after.

They:

  • absorb well
  • don’t leave a noticeable white cast
  • feel lightweight on the skin

Key Ingredients & Why They Work

UV Clear:

  • Zinc Oxide (9%) : mineral protection (can cause cast, but formula is refined)
  • Octinoxate (7.5%): chemical sunscreen agent, shields the skin from UVB rays
  • Niacinamide : helps with oil control and calms inflammation
  • Lactic Acid : gentle exfoliation

Why it works on dark skin:
The formula is micronized well enough that the zinc doesn’t sit chalky on the surface.

UV Daily:

  • Zinc Oxide
  • Hyaluronic Acid: hydration and plumping of fine lines
  • Vitamin E: antioxidant protection

This is why it gives more of a hydrated, slightly dewy finish

UV Clear vs UV Daily (important)

ProductFinish
UV ClearMore matte
UV DailyMore hydrating / dewy

My take:

  • I reach for UV Clear when I want:
    • oil control
    • a cleaner, matte base
    • often times works best under makeup for me
  • I reach for UV Daily when I want:
    • hydration
    • balance in my skin
    • protection and a glowy finish

Verdict:

These are my solid and dependable sunscreens, with great blend.

#2 EltaMD Tinted (UV Clear / UV Daily Deep Tinted)

SonderBeaut

My experience:

This is my:

“I don’t feel like wearing makeup but still want to look put together” sunscreen!

Key Ingredients

  • Iron Oxides: provide tint and protects against visible light (important for hyperpigmentation)
  • Zinc Oxide: UV protection
  • Same base ingredients as untinted versions (niacinamide, HA depending on formula)

Why it works SO well for dark skin

The tint:

  • neutralizes white cast
  • evens out skin tone
  • gives light coverage

What I love most:

  • It blends into my skin beautifully!
  • Gives a soft, even complexion
  • Looks like your skin, but better
  • Matches my deep brown skin perfectly

Finish differences:

ProductFinish
UV Clear TintedSlightly more matte
UV Daily TintedMore hydrated / glowy

My take:

This is the one I wear when I want to:

  • leave the house quickly to a day event
  • skip foundation
  • still look polished

Verdict:

Best “no-makeup” makeup sunscreen

#1 Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun (THE BEST)

SonderBeaut

Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice & Probiotics SPF 50

My experience:

This is one of the best sunscreens I’ve ever used. My skin actually looks BETTER when I wear it. For my skin, I think it makes it look even better than applying makeup.

Key Ingredients (why it stands out to me)

  • Rice Extract (30%)
    brightening, nourishing, softening
  • Probiotics (fermented extracts)
support skin barrier and overall skin health
  • Modern chemical UV filters
    completely transparent on skin
    no white cast at all

Why it blends flawlessly on dark skin

Unlike mineral sunscreens:

  • there’s no zinc sitting on top of the skin
  • no gray or purple undertone

It literally melts into your skin leaving it hydrated and glowy (but not greasy).

The best part:

It feels so light I genuinely forget I’m even wearing sunscreen!

By the end of the day there’s no heaviness, buildup, or irritation

My take:

It feels more like skincare and protection in one step

Verdict:

SonderBeaut

It’s the most comfortable sunscreen I’ve used and it has incredible hydrating properties without overdoing it. It also has the best finish on my melanated skin that I’ve ever experienced.

And people with other skin tones have also praised it’s finish.

My Ranking:

  1. Beauty of Joseon: best overall, most skin-enhancing
  2. EltaMD Tinted: best for coverage and even tone
  3. EltaMD Untinted: best basic, reliable option

If you have dark skin, prioritize:

  • no white cast
  • comfortable wear
  • finish (matte vs dewy)
  • ingredients that support your skin long-term

Not every sunscreen is made with melanated skin in mind.

But these are the ones that actually work.
