Neuromodulators (Botox) and COVID vaccine

Neurotoxins have typically been the gateway drug for aesthetic injectable treatments, and there’s no wonder why it is a multi-billion-dollar global beauty treatment- it works! Smoothing lines, tightening, lifting your face- ahhh. If you are a consistent user of any neuromodulator (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, Jeuveau, Daxxify) how would you feel if it just stopped working on you? I don’t mean when one brand starts to lose the bulk effect or doesn’t last as long; I am talking about what if all 5 FDA approved neurotoxins just stopped working on you altogether. This is what happened to me after two doses of the Pfizer vaccine in 2021. Not only were all 5 brands ineffective, but I had an allergic reaction of welts immediately after injection in the injected areas.
The interesting thing is I have been an aesthetic nurse since 2010 administering these injections to clients as well so how ironic is it that it now does not have an effect on me. Also, as a woman in her 40s, I cannot tell you how upsetting this was after having benefited for so long with the wonderful effects. Of course, this isn’t the end of the world, but it would be so much sweeter if it worked. However, the other side of the coin is it made me explore the many other beauty treatments that may not be as effective or quick for smoothing lines, but that provide nutrition and health for the skin thus offering longer term benefits. We must not forget beauty devices, regenerative treatments, skincare, and sunscreen!
The advice given from my colleagues: 1) an allergist said prep yourself with a Medrol dose pack and 2 allergy meds 2) try Myobloc Botulinum Toxin B which has apparently been effective when the Covid vaccine inhibited the neurotoxin A effects, 3) wait one more year until June 2025 then try again. The last time I tried was in June 2023 and have been hesitant to because of fear of being disappointed at the possible ineffectiveness…will update in due time!
